The Gujarat Titans are an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise cricket team from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, founded in 2021. Their home ground is the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, and they are owned by CVC Capital Partners. The team is led by Hardik Pandya and coached by Ashish Nehra. They won their first IPL championship in the 2022 season, making them the current titleholders.
In the October 2021 auction held in Dubai, CVC Capital Partners secured the Ahmedabad franchise. Prior to the IPL 2022 mega auction, the team appointed Hardik Pandya as their captain and also added Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan to their roster. On February 9, 2022, the team officially announced its name as the Gujarat Titans.
Despite being considered weak in their auction methods and selections during their first-ever auction, the Gujarat Titans surprised everyone with their impressive performances in the IPL. They secured their first win against fellow newcomers Lucknow Super Giants, and eventually won 10 of their 14 group matches, finishing at the top of the table with 20 points. In the playoffs, they defeated Rajasthan Royals in the first qualifier and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second qualifier to make it to the final.
In the final, they restricted Rajasthan to 130 runs on a pitch on which they were asked to bowl first, and then chased down the target with 11 balls to spare, with Shubman Gill hitting the winning six off the first ball of the 19th over. Hardik Pandya was awarded the Man of the Match for his outstanding bowling figures of 3/17 and his 34 runs from 30 balls with a strike rate of 113.33.
Critics have applauded Pandya’s captaincy, bowling, and batting skills, and have praised the management for effectively utilizing their players and working as a team to win the tournament.
