At the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, the IPL 2008 championship game featured the Rajasthan Royals and the Chennai Super Kings. With Shane Warne as their captain, the Rajasthan Royals ended the league stage at the top of the standings and emerged as one of the tournament’s surprises. The dynamic Indian captain MS Dhoni captained the Chennai Super Kings, who had a solid team on paper.
Final Result
The final was a closely contested match, with the Rajasthan Royals winning the toss and electing to bat first. They got off to a good start, with opener Graeme Smith scoring a quickfire 33 off 25 balls. However, they lost wickets at regular intervals and were struggling at 102/4 in the 15th over. Yusuf Pathan then played a blistering inning of 56 off just 39 balls, which included four fours and four sixes, to take the Rajasthan Royals to a competitive total of 164/7 in their 20 overs.
The Chennai Super Kings’ response was struggling early on, losing the early wickets of Parthiv Patel and Suresh Raina. However, they were kept in the game by superb innings from the Australian opener Matthew Hayden, who scored 44 off just 36 balls. But it was not enough, as the Rajasthan Royals bowlers kept taking wickets at crucial intervals. In the end, the Chennai Super Kings fell short by just three runs, finishing on 161/9 in their 20 overs.

The Rajasthan Royals therefore came the first titleholders of the IPL, and their palm was celebrated extensively across India. The platoon had a number of youthful Indian players who had performed admirably throughout the event, including Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Siddharth Trivedi. Shane Warne’s captaincy was also praised for his canny decision- timber and politic wit.
Overall, the IPL 2008 was a huge success, both on and off the field. The tournament attracted large crowds and was widely watched on television, both in India and abroad.
